GRAFTON—Julie Dowdy’s 11U Base Invaders team has been grabbing the attention of area competitors as they built an impressive winning streak, taking the “W” in more than ten straight games before heading into play-off action.
During the first-round of play offs, the team held true to their name, invading the bases and earning a 13-1 victory over Calhoun’s Diamond Devils to move one step closer to the championship game.
At the bottom of the first, Makayla White and Adree Wiles would start the game with singles, followed by a double from the bat of Mya Johnson and another single from Braelynn Jones. A triple from Kaizley Carr, and Jaydence Garcia’s single gave the Base Invaders the early 6-0 lead.
The team would tack on six more runs during the bottom of the second and added their final run off a stolen base.
For round two, the Base Invaders went head-to-head with Shinnston in Glenville, with Jones toeing the rubber and Adree Wiles behind the plate catching.
After two innings, the game’s score would sit at a 1-1 tie, broken in the bottom of the third when Olivia Barker would be hit by the pitcher and would score off stolen bases, giving the Invaders a one run lead.
Shinnston would tie things up once again at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, however, during the fifth, Jones struck out their first three at bat, allowing her team to make a move in the bottom of the fifth.
During the frame, Jones would hit a single, Kaizley Carr would follow with an in the park home run to bring both her and Jones home. This play sealed the 4-2 win for the Base Invaders and advanced them to the final round of play, which was held later that same day.
The third and final game, the Championship game, matched Dowdy’s Base Invaders with Lewis County.
Lewis County’s offense managed a hit in the opening inning, and would score off Raelynn Heath’s RBI, but faced with the Invaders’ defense, they were unable to add any more runs that frame, while the Base Invaders took the plate by storm and added three quick runs.
At the top of the third, Lewis’s Sydney Holcomb would score on an in-park home run, but Jones would strike out the next two batters up to the plate, maintaining the lead at 3-2.
The Base Invaders went on to add a run in the fourth inning when Johnson was hit by the pitcher and scored on stolen bases.
Jones again struck out Lewis’s three batters, to hold them scoreless in the fifth, while the team added two runs of their own from Hannah Dowdy and Brakelle Strum.
Lewis added their third and final run of the game in the top of the sixth, however, it wouldn’t be enough to catch the Invaders, who earned the 6-3 win and championship title.
Julie Dowdy’s 11U Base Invader team would end the season with a very impressive 16-1 record.
The Base Invader girls dedicated their winning streak and championship win to Daniel Dowdy chanting, “We did it for Daniel!” when they gathered after their championship win. Their motto throughout the season has been #DingersForDaniel and they want Mr. Daniel to know that they love him and are proud of him for being DANIEL STRONG, according to a team parent.
