Posted: Sunday, Feb 12th, 2017

GRAFTON—West Virginia University Baseball Assistant Coach Cody Atkinson, visited Taylor County Middle School to talk the students, on Friday.

Atkinson spoke to grades fifth through eighth, about being positive and staying focused to make good life choices.

Guidance Counselor Renee Mahon, contacted WVU Baseball and asked them to come speak to the students.

“I wanted to get a speaker to come talk about responsibility, and making good life choices,” said Mahon.

Mahon is the advisor for RAZE and Project Purple for the school.

Atkinson and student assistant, JT Heernan, shared a PowerPoint presentation with the students, and interacted with them throughout the presentation.

Atkinson told the students, “You can turn any negative situation into a positive situation, with the right approach.”

He talked to the students about focus stating, focus is easy for some but harder for others also.

“Focusing on things you like can be easier but it is important to try to focus harder on things you don’t like you have to put more effort in to be able to reach your goals, he told the students,” shared Atkinson.

Atkinson also talked to students about the importance of putting forth their best effort.

“If you do your best then you will not have regrets about the outcome,” said Atkinson. “When you leave here the outcome will be something different for everyone all I can do is my best.”

He told the students they can only do their best, and never to worry or feel negative about anything that they cannot change.

Atkinson told students that others might form opinions about them but they should not based their actions off of those opinions.

“Everyone is allowed to have an opinions, maybe they are wrong maybe they are right, what is important is to be mature and understand it,” expressed Atkinson. “The opinion you have of yourself is more important.”

Atkinson shared he has been doing the speeches for about eight years. WVU Baseball Head Coach Randy Mazey, has been sharing this perspective with others, including the players on the baseball team.
