GRAFTON – Grafton High School Social Studies Teacher, Richard Zukowski, is setting the standard for thinking outside of the box. In an effort to introduce his AP American Government Politics class to legislators, and encouraging them to ask questions of those legislators, Zukowski united efforts with the Taylor County Collaborative Family Resource Network (FRN) to bring Marion County Delegate Tim Manchin, Taylor County Delegate Mike Manypenny and West Virginia Republican Executive Committee Chairman Conrad Lucas to Grafton High School. State Senator Dave Sypolt and Speaker of the House of Delegates Tim Miley were both scheduled to be in attendance, but due to scheduling issues were not present.

In addition to Walesca Marrero, Director of the Taylor County Collaborative Family Resource Network (FRN), several surrounding FRN directors were present to start the session by explaining what the function of an FRN is in each community. The FRN Directors and Associates present included April Miller of the Tucker County Family Resource Network (FRN), Linda Watson of the Barbour County Family Resource Network (FRN), Elizabeth Shayhan of the Harrison County Family Resource Network (FRN), Rebecca Vance of the Randolph County Family Resource Network (FRN) and Taylor County Family Resource Network (FRN) Vista and Mentor Joe Solberg.

“We constantly check the community to see what the problems are, and then mobilize our support agencies to help in the areas identified,” explained Shayhan. From teenage pregnancy, to school drop-out rates, to drug abuse awareness and take-back efforts, to helping feed the hungry, FRN’s are an active resource in each county.

Just as Mr. Zukowski and his students learned from the session, all three representatives expressed their appreciation for the input and the time they had to learn from the students of Grafton High.
