Lawrence Ray “Larry” Satterfield, age 83 of Rt. 1, Independence, passed away Monday, September 2, 2013 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
He was born June 17, 1930 in Uffington, WV a son of the late Zella B. and Lillie Ruth (Morris) Satterfield.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Harlene (Matthews) Satterfield, whom he married June 24, 1955; two sons, Richard Eugene Satterfield and wife, Gina, and Rodney Ray Satterfield all of Independence; two daughters, Sheri Janelle Grubb and husband, Robert, and Brenda Dawn Blosser and husband, Fred, all of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Matthew Francis Blosser, Elizabeth Price Satterfield, John Lawrence “Jack” Satterfield and Hannah Nicole Kyle and husband, Jesse; one great-grandson, Cutler; two sisters, Ruby Guthrie of Grafton and Marie Stevens of CA; one brother-in-law, Robert Matthews and wife, Pat of Punxatawney, PA; three sisters-in-law, Janice Satterfield of Kissimmee, FL, Margaret Satterfield of Troy, OH and Barbara Matthews of Grafton; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold Satterfield and Earl Lewis Satterfield, and three brothers-in-law, Harold Stevens, French Guthrie, and Bill Matthews
Larry graduated from Grafton High School with the Class of 1948 then worked for Harman Construction.
He then joined the US Army and served from 1951-1954 during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he worked again at Harman Construction for a total of 6 years.
He taught Horticulture at Pruntytown Correctional Center from 1991 to 2000, and was the manager of Teaching Research Management at WVU Greenhouse, retiring after 32 years.
He was a member of the Charleston Post 20 American Legion; a member of the NRA; and a member of the Independence Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Wednesday, September 4th from 2:00-8:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept.5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Carl Trickett and Pastor Ronald G. Ford officiating.
Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Memorial City Post 3081, Taylor County Post 12 American Legion, D.A.V. Chapter 24, and the WV Army National Guard of Kingwood.
