Happy Birthday West Virginia

Posted: Wednesday, Jun 19th, 2013

WEST VIRGINIA CELEBRATES 150TH YEAR AS A STATE - The West Virginia State Capitol is shown above decorated for the state’s 150th Birthday. In celebration of this landmark, Governor Tomblin has asked church, schools and individuals across the state to participate in a bell ringing on Thursday, June 20, at 1:50 p.m. Those interested in participating in the bell ringing are asked to ring their bells 35 times to signify West Virginia’s status as our nation’s 35th state.

GRAFTON - One hundred and fifty years ago, West Virginia became the 35th state! The only state born as a result of the Civil War. Up until that time, Grafton was part of the state of Virginia. Still mostly wilderness, this area attracted settlers who were moving inland and westward from the east coast. Some moved on further on their journey to establish a new life in this vast “new world” while others stopped along the way and thus communities began to spring up and soon turned into small towns in this new state of West Virginia.

According to Ms. Brenda Thompson, Chairperson of the CVB, Grafton will host their celebration Saturday, June 22, located in the area of the parking lot on Main Street beside the Grafton City Council Chambers Building beginning at noon with music provided by After Kut, a local group new to the music scene.

And what would a birthday party be without presents? The CVB will be presenting gift bags with West Virginia memorabilia to those in attendance.
