Vernon Monroe Cathell, Sr.

Vernon Monroe Cathell, Sr., age 79, of RR 4, Pruntytown community, Grafton, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He was born October 24, 1933, at Meadland, Taylor County, WV, a son of the late Harry Edwin Cathell and Elizabeth (Moore) Cathell. His wife of 57 years, June Clare (Efaw) Cathell, passed away on December 24, 2012, they were united in marriage August 9, 1955.

Mr. Cathell was a 1951 graduate of Grafton High School, and a US Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Equitable Gas Company with over 30 years service, where he worked as a Transmission Station Operator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and carpentry work. He also enjoyed bowling and bowled on a league. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a Baptist by faith.

He is survived by: two sons, Vernon Monroe Cathell, Jr. and wife Jane, and Danny Allen Cathell and wife Brenda; four grandchildren, Mika Thompson, Andrew Thompson and wife Amber, Victoria (Cathell) Wagner and husband Dana, Jessica (Cathell) Sinclair and husband Justin; two great-grandchildren, Emmalynn and Grayson Wagner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: one daughter, Starla June (Cathell) Thompson; three brothers, Edwin, Stewart, and Dorsey Cathell; one sister, Mary (Cathell) Goodwin.

Graveside services will be conducted at 12 noon at the WV National Cemetery, Friday, January 18, 2013, with Chaplin Randy Jennings officiating. Inurnment will follow.

Military graveside services will be accorded by the VFW Memorial City Post #3081, American Legion Taylor County Post #12, Central WV DAV Chapter 24, and their auxiliaries, and the WV Army National Honor Guard of Camp Dawson.
