CAMERON -- Three members of the Grafton High School Wrestling Team claimed the titles of their respective weight classes during the Dragons Tri-State Wrestling Invitational Tournament that was held in the Cameron High School Gym last Saturday, Jan. 5.

They were Cody Goff, at 113-pounds, Tyler Moore, at 152 pounds, and Ryan Helmick, at 285 pounds. Meanwhile, Taylor Espinosa, at 132 pounds, and Jacob Dierkes, at 220 pounds, lost in the final-round matches of their respective weight classes to finish in second place, and the duo of Briar Hickman, at 138 pounds, and Ethan Lucas were third-place finishers.

Moore was voted upon by the coaches to receive the Most-Outstanding Wrestler Award, after winning a weight class that featured five athletes with winning records at the start of this tournament.

With seven athletes finishing in the top three positions, coach Rod Auvil’s Bearcats scored a total of 147.5 points and wound up in third place out of nine teams, in spite of leaving five weight classes -- 106 pounds, 120 pounds, 126 pounds, 160 pounds and 170 pounds -- open for this event.

The final team scores from this tournament looked like this: 1. Magnolia 170; 2. Clay-Battelle 153; 3. Grafton 147.5; 4. Cameron 145; 5. Tyler Consolidated 136; 6. Weir 55; Weirton Madonna 32; 7. Cameron Junior Varsity 13; 8. Grafton Junior Varsity 11; McMechen Bishop Donahue 2; and 12. John Marshall Junior Varsity 0.

“With us leaving five weight classes open, I believe that the kids we did have on the mats did a great job here today,” Auvil said. “So, I am pleased with a third-place finish in this tournament.”

Also representing Grafton High School in last Saturday’s action were: Mitchell Shreves winding up in fourth place in the 145-pound bracket; Michael Watkins placing fourth in the 285-pound division as a junior varsity entry; and Cody Jenkins posting an 0-2 record in the 182-pound bracket.

The Bearcats are scheduled to attend the two-day Braxton County Big-16 Wrestling Tournament this Friday, Jan. 11, and Saturday, Jan. 12. The action will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, and it will resume at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
