Reassuring safety in Taylor County schools

Posted: Monday, Dec 24th, 2012

GRAFTON – In light of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Taylor County parents are noticing an increased law enforcement presence at Taylor County schools.

The tragic events in Connecticut have reinforced a commitment across the United States to protect our innocent school children from such an unprecedented event.

According to Taylor County Superintendent of Schools, Bob Maynard, the administration of the Taylor County Board of Education have been visiting the five Taylor County schools throughout the last week, checking on safety procedures and policies. Maynard, and assistant superintendent, Sam McDaniel, have been re-evaluating each school’s safety plan and re-enforcing safety procedures to each school’s administration.

Maynard also explained that a number of rumors have been circulating about threats of violence at some of the facilities. He assured the Mountain Statesman that the administration has been working closely with local law enforcement officers in investigating each rumor.

“This has heightened everybody’s awareness,” Maynard stated. “Each school’s safety plan is different, but the basic overall plans are the same. We are starting a continuing discussion about how Taylor County schools can do better. We want to make our buildings as safe as we possibly can.”

Over the past five years, Taylor County schools have worked toward increasing security. Safety Access Vestibules have been installed in all five facilities, and right now, maintenance crews are prioritizing their efforts to make the buildings as safe as can be.

Over the past week, an added presence from Taylor County law enforcement has been noted at the schools. Maynard stated that the local law enforcement agencies have always worked well with the school system, and have done “an outstanding job at providing us with support.”
