Grafton girls suffer two season-opening losses

Posted: Monday, Dec 3rd, 2012

CLARKSBURG -- The Grafton High School Lady Bearcats lost their opening game in Big Ten Conference play, falling to the home-standing Robert C. Byrd Lady Eagles, 46-35, here last Friday night.

Coach Tom Spadafore’s Lady Bearcats also lost to the home-standing Clay-Battelle Lady Cee-Bees, 52-32, last Tuesday night in Blacksville, during the season-opening game for both teams.

Friday’s game saw the Lady Eagles use an early 10-2 run, and eventually lead 16-4 by the end of the first quarter.

However, from that point on, the Lady Bearcats out-scored their hostesses by a 31-30 margin.

“We dug that early hole, and we just could not climb back out of it,” Spadafore said. “But, I think we settled down, and then played much better basketball, especially in the second half of this ball game.”

Grafton saw freshmen score 22 of its 35 points, as Tessa Clark wound with a team-high total of 11. She was joined by her classmates, Hannah Griffith with nine, and Janel Kittle with two. Also scoring some points for the Lady Bearcats were Kari Fawcett with seven, Shawna Graham with four, and Kristen Weaver with two.

At Blacksville, the Duo of Cox and Griffith tossed in nine points apiece to top Grafton’s scoring column. They were joined by Fawcett with five, Graham with four, Weaver with three, and Clark with two.

Tarra Riffle (13 points) and McKayla Wilkins (10 points) scored in double figures to lead the Lady Cee-Bees on Tuesday, before Sarah Barksdale (game-high totals of 18 points and eight rebounds) was a big factor in the scoring column for the Lady Eagles on Friday.

“I saw some improvement from our first game into the second one,” Spadafore said. “We just need to keep improving, as the season moves along.”

The Lady Bearcats will return to Clarksburg Tuesday to tangle with the Lady Irish of Notre Dame High School.
