GRAFTON – It is that time of the year, when Taylor County residents open their hearts, and wallets, to support worthy causes that directly affect our friends and neighbors. A long-standing tradition has brought smile to the faces of children, who may not have much to smile about, every Christmas season.

What was formerly known as Shop-With-A-Cop, is now known as A First Responder Christmas.

Every year, first responders, including law enforcement from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department, Grafton Police Department, the West Virginia State Police, the Department of Natural Resources, Tygart Lake, Pruntytown Correctional Center, FBI and CSX, along with firefighters and emergency service personnel gather together to bring smiles to as many children as possible through this program.

Every year, local emergency personnel have joined with the law enforcement volunteers to help make this program a rousing success. This year, the name change reflects that. It is not just cops who volunteer their time, and the organizers wanted the name to reflect that.

The number of children taken each year is directly linked to the amount of donations received. Private individuals, businesses and civic organizations have always supported this worthwhile cause, and this year will be no different. The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge #116 is seeking your help in making this year’s event the most successful to date.

FOP associates are out trying to raise the needed money to pull off this event, and they need your support. Remember, 100% of the money raised for A First Responder Christmas goes to the benefit of the chosen children. In the past, there have been up to 132 kids taken shopping due to the generosity of Taylor County citizens. Any donation is appreciated, from $2 to $2,000. And, all donations are tax deductible.

Donations are being collected from now until Dec, 6. You can mail your donation to The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 116, P.O. Box 535, Grafton, WV 26354 or call Michelle at (304) 476-2752, or Terry at (304) 265-5748.

Remember, without these volunteers and the support of our community, this event would not be possible.
