GRAFTON -- The Buckhannon-Upshur Soccer Teams rolled into McKinney Field last Thursday evening and swept a girls’ and boys’ twin bill away from the home-standing Grafton High School Lady Bearcats and Bearcats, respectively.
In the girls’ match, the Lady Buccaneers used goals by seven different players to claim a 7-0 victory over the Lady Bearcats.
In the nightcap, Marty Elliott picked up a hat-trick (three goals) for the Buccaneers, as they handed the Bearcats a 3-1 defeat to complete the sweep.
Brooklyn Waddell scored at the 36:03 mark of the first half to give the Buckhannon-Upshur girls a lead that they would not relinquish.
Taylor Starkey added the second goal for the Lady Buccaneers at the 16:51 mark, increasing the lead to 2-0.
“We played a good 20 minutes of soccer in between those two goals,” said Grafton’s coach Lorraine Isner. “And, I was pleased with that effort.”
Jessica Feronti and Victoria Wood added first-half goals for the visitors, opening up a 4-0 cushion by the intermission.
Then, the trio of Emily Godwin, Torrie Ward and Alexis Green scored a goal apiece during the second-half action.
“Buckhannon is really well-coached, and they have one of the best soccer programs in the state, and they have had a soccer team since the late 80s,” Isner said. “So, I knew coming into this match that we would have had to play 80 full minutes of high-quality soccer to compete with them.”
Buckhannon took 22 shots in this contest, placed 16 of them on goal, and scored seven times, while Grafton’s back-up goalie, Janel Kittle, recorded nine saves.
Kittle, in her first varsity start, was tending the net for an ill-feeling Shawna Graham.
Grafton was credited with eight shots, landing three of them on goal for Buckhannon-Upshur’s keeper Kelsey Hinzman to stop, which she did.
Buckhannon-Upshur held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks, and was called for three fouls to Grafton’s two.
In the nightcap, Marty Elliott scored in the first half to give the Buccaneers an early 1-0 lead, before Grafton’s Briar Hickman scored on a penalty kick to tie contest up at 1-1...That 1-1 score stood up through the half-time intermission.
“Our guys played a great half of soccer,” said Grafton Boys’ Soccer Coach Bryant McCarthy. “Then, we got a couple of kids hurt during the second half, and the game slipped away from us as a result.”
Elliott scored his other two goals mid-way through the second half to create the final 3-1 score.
“Last year, they beat us 10-0,” said McCarthy. “So, I’m certainly not displeased by the effort that our boys gave us out here tonight.”
The Buccaneers had 12 shots on goal to Grafton’s four, and they enjoyed a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Meanwhile, goalie Stephen Tennant recorded nine saves in the net for the Bearcats, while Cam Blake had three saves for the Buccaneers.
The Bearcats were set to take an overall record of 2-13 onto McKinney Field Saturday to play the Hedgesville Eagles, after the Lady Bearcats took an overall 11-4-1 record into last Saturday’s home match with the Martinsburg Lady Bulldogs, hoping to break out of a their three-game streak without a victory.
Both Grafton teams will return to action Tuesday in Clarksburg, taking on Robert C. Byrd.
