Geneva Marie (Simon) Phelps

Geneva Marie (Simon) Phelps, 91, of Flemington, WV passed away on November 17, 2012, at the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport.†

She was born June 17, 1921 in Kenmare, North Dakota, a foster daughter of the late Philip S. and Etta Hollen Simon.† She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard R. Phelps on August 16, 2007.

Geneva was a homemaker, former correspondent with the Clarksburg Telegram and a retired clerk from the U.S. Postal Service.† After retiring she became active in the Taylor County Historical and Genealogical Society and assisted with the Taylor County History Book and was editor of the newsletter for many years.†

She researched family history and published An Annal Begins and Michael Boyles as well as three volumes of area history, We Were, We Are.†

She received numerous awards and honors throughout her lifetime, including the Rod Hansford Award for community service, Flemington Lionís Club Citizen of the Year for her work on the Veteranís†Memorial Park, Mother of the year in 2005 by the Anna Jarvis birthplace.†

She was a member and past officer of the Flemington Womanís Club and the and the Flemington CEOS.†

Geneva served on the Taylor County Library Board, Flemington Dayís committee, and volunteered in the PTA and band boosters for many years while her children were in school.† She enjoyed quilting, traveling with family and friends, and was an avid reader.† She was a graduate of the 1938 Grafton High School class.†

Geneva is survived by two sons, Leonard R. Phelps and wife Nancy of LaGrange, OH and Calvin E. Phelps and wife Mary of Easton, PA; three daughters, Phyllis R. Sanow and husband Gilbert of Elyria, OH, Nadine DeBlasio and husband Alfred of Bridgeport, and Beverly A. Kinsey and husband James of Flemington; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren; sister-in-law June Phelps Moyer †of Fairmont, WV; and several nieces and nephews.†

She was preceded in death by one grandson, John Patrick Phelps.

The family will receive friends at the Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton on Tuesday, November 20, from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour on Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chris Mullett officiating.

Interment will follow at the Simpson Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Taylor County Public Library or the Flemington Baptist Church, of which her husband was designer and builder.
