With our Grafton Bearcats coming off of a 2-8 season, and the Philip Barbour Colts coming off of a 5-5 season, it’s going to be interesting to see what transpires on the brand new turf surface here at McKinney Field at 7:30 p.m. today...The new turf will be dedicated during a 7:10 ceremony, before tonight’s action begins.
The Colts return three of their top skilled-position players from last year’s team. That group includes: quarterback Dillon Newman, who ran for 992 yards and threw for 345 more; running back Dylan Johnson, who ran for 438 yards; and wide receiver Al Johnson, who caught 15 passes for 249 yards.
Dylan Johnson also led the Philip Barbour defense last fall by recording 61 tackles, and Grafton returns its leading tackler from a year ago, too. He is sophomore linebacker Matt Dillon, who made 74 stops as a freshman starter in 2012.
The trio of quarterback Josh Musgrove, and running backs Corey Moore and Brody Withers, will be returning on offense for the Bearcats. Their combined efforts resulted in 13 of Grafton’s 17 touchdowns in the 2012 season.
Musgrove accounted for 767 yards and three touchdowns with his arm, and he also gained 139 yards and scored three touchdowns with his legs last fall. Moore ran for 487 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Bearcats in scoring with 30 points, and Withers ran for 181 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Last year’s season-opening game went right down to the wire, as Grafton’s Zach Rowand kicked a game-winning, 23-yard field goal with just four seconds left to play in the contest to give the Bearcats a 31-28 victory in Philippi. So, don’t be surprised if tonight’s game is another close one.For the complete article see the 08-30-2013 issue.
