Bearcats tumble to Webster County, 67-60

BEARCAT ALEX GABBERT, pictured here during the recent Sam Bord Memorial Scholarship Tournament that was held in the Scotty Hamilton Gym on the campus of Grafton High School, tossed in 10 points during a 67-60 loss to the Webster County Highlanders last Thursday in Clarksburg in a first-round game of the Notre Dame/BB&T Holiday Basketball Classic.

GRAFTON -- The Grafton High School Bearcats traveled to the Notre Dame High School Gym on Dec. 27 to face the Webster County Highlanders in a boys’ basketball match-up.

The Bearcats fell to the Highlanders, 67-60, during the first day of the Notre Dame/BB&T Holiday Basketball Classic.

Grafton claimed a 14-11 lead in the opening quarter of the game, then lost a narrow 19-18 count during the second stanza.

That action left the Bearcats clinging to a 32-30 half-time lead. However, the Highlanders went on to win the next two quarters by the scores of 19-14 and 18-14 to claim the seven-point victory.

Three Bearcats scored in double figures. They were Skylar Rucker with 23 points and 14 rebounds, Joe Christopher with 13 points, and Alex Gabbert with 10 points.

Also scoring some points for Grafton were: Chris Smith with eight; Drew Waters with four; and Nate Moses with two.

Grafton, now 2-6 overall, as well as, 1-4 in the Big Ten Conference, will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 3, taking on the Fairmont West Polar Bears at the Woody Williams Armory over in the Friendly City.
