GRAFTON -- Coach Andy Sorine loaded up a Taylor County school bus last Thursday night and took his Grafton High School Bearcats over to Philippi to open the 2012-1013 boys’ basketball season against the home-standing Philip Barbour Colts.
The Colts claimed a 46-37 victory over the Bearcats, thus spoiling Sorine’s coaching debut with Grafton High School.
In a low-scoring first half, the Colts eked out an 11-9 advantage by the end of the first quarter, only to have the Bearcats win the second stanza by a 7-3 margin to create a 16-14 Grafton advantage by the intermission.
Philip Barbour regained the lead, using a 17-7 scoring spree in the third quarter.
Then, the Colts added a 15-14 edge in the fourth quarter to claim a nine-point Big Ten Conference victory.
Quentin Mouser scored 21 of Philip Barbour’s 46 points during the contest, while Antonio Dalton (ten), Chance Price (eight), Ryan Martin (five), and Mason Kennedy (two) rounded out the attack.
Joe Christopher (eight), Alex Gabbert (seven), Ivy Bartlett (six), Chris Smith (six), Skylar Rucker (four), and the trio of Corey Robinson, Jyron Stull and Nathan Moses (two apiece) provided Grafton’s 37 points on the night.
