GRAFTON -- Coming off of a 9-13 record last winter, the Grafton High School (GHS) Girls’ Basketball Team will have three returning starters to build their 2012-2013 season around. Plus, last year’s junior varsity team wound up with an 11-4 season, and the incoming freshmen class went 19-1 at Taylor County Middle School.
“Our younger kids are learning the system, slowly, but we have several girls back from last year’s team, and that group is running well ahead of where we were at this time a year ago,” says head coach Tom Spadafore, who is being assisted with the coaching duties by Steve Smith and Rocky Loughry.
Senior wing-guard Kari Fawcett, senior center Kristen Weaver, and junior point-guard Morgan Cox are all returning starters, while two junior forwards -- Shyanne Elsey and Shawna Graham -- are returning lettermen.
Fawcett, who stands five-feet and seven-inches tall, is Grafton’s top returning scorer. She tossed in 195 points last winter, to go along with 116 rebounds, 61 steals and 66 assists. About to become a four-year letterman, Fawcett has scored a career total of 457 points.
Weaver, a 6-1 low-post player, tossed in 100 points, yanked down 142 rebounds, and blocked 51 shots last winter.
Cox, who stands in at 5-5, scored 136 points and passed out 66 assists, while collecting 66 steals and 51 rebounds. Also, towards the end of the season, she started to accept more of a leadership role on the offensive end of the floor.
Elsey, 5-10, and Graham, 5-7, combined for 53 points, 84 rebounds, 12 steals and 11 assists, while playing in back-up roles to seniors, and now GHS graduates, Abby Rowand, Devin Pryor and Korey Rucker.
The team may also be counting heavily upon a freshman, Hannah Griffith, who has caught the eyes of the coaching staff. “I think she is going to be a basketball player,” said Coach Smith. Griffith, standing in at 5-9, is the daughter of Grafton High School’s all-time leading female scorer, June (Shriver) Griffith, who scored a career total of 1,140 points for the Blue & Gold.
