GRAFTON -- While traveling to Sabraton, and playing in a triangular volleyball match, Monday night, the Grafton Lady Bearcat spikers gave coach Karen Anderson the first varsity victory of her high school career.
Grafton defeated the Lady Dragons of Cameron, 2-0, during the first match of the night. Then, the hostesses from Trinity Christian School took the floor and beat Cameron, 2-0, in the rocking chair match, and went on to top Grafton, 2-0, in the nightcap.
“I’m proud of our girls, and the way they played in that first match tonight” coach Anderson said. “It was a nail-biter, and my daughter, Brianna, served for the final two points of that first game. That made it a little extra-special for me.”
The younger Anderson’s final two points gave the Lady Bearcats an exciting 30-28 victory during the first game against Cameron. Then, Grafton added a 25-23 win during an equally close second game to wrap up their first match victory of the season.
Scoring the 55 points for the Lady Bearcats were Heather Moran, with 12, Brittany Marcavage, with 10, Megan Weber, with 10, Anderson, with 10, Shelby Rush, with five, Emily Holmes, with five, and Jaymie Snider with three.
In the nightcap, the Lady Warriors topped the Lady Bearcats by a 25-19 & 25-14 count.
Marcavage (eight), Moran (seven), Weber (six), Snider (six), Brianna (three) and Snider (three) provided Grafton’s total of 33 points during that match with Trinity Christian.
The split lifted the Lady Bearcats up to 1-13 overall, while they remained 0-10 in Big Ten Conference play.
Grafton’s spikers will jump back into action at 6 p.m. Thursday, hosting the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buccaneers here in the Scotty Hamilton Gym.
