GRAFTON -- Two recently graduated Grafton High School Baseball Bearcats made the 2012 All-Big Ten Conference Second Team, when the league’s coaches released their diamond squad earlier this week.
Jason Wagner, an infielder, and Drew Musgrove, a utility man, received those honors for Grafton, after Matt Dillon’s team recorded an 8-19 season.
Wagner led Grafton’s offensive attack with a .348 batting average, based on 32 hits in 92 at-bats. The shortstop also led the team with 25 runs-scored, and he collected 19 runs-batted-in this spring.
Wagner graduated with a four-year-career batting average of .362, showing 101 hits during his 279 at-bats.
Musgrove collected 26 hits during his 80 at-bats to wind up hitting at a .325 pace this year. He scored 18 runs and chased home 18 more with some hits that resulted in runs-batted-in.
The infielder, who played second base, shortstop and third base during the course of his senior season, produced a career batting average of .307, based on his 42 hits during a total of 137 at-bats.
Joining Grafton’s duo of Wagner and Musgrove on the Second Team were: four Elkins Tigers, James Gainer, Caten Murphy, Brennan Dettinger and Clayton Colbert; three Philip Barbour Colts, Chance Price, Seth Fitzwater and Doug Smith; three Lewis County Minutemen, Luke Pudder, Nick Minutelli and Tyler Wood; two Lincoln Cougars, Jacob McDougal and Hunter Hamrick; and two Bridgeport Indians, Corey Mann and Luke Ash; as well as, Daniel Powel of Buckhannon-Upshur; Brent Osborne of North Marion; Seth Corwin of East Fairmont; Chase Alonso of Liberty; and Brandon Kroll of Robert C. Byrd.
The league’s top honors were handed out to Fairmont West’s Steve Naternicola, as Coach of the Year; and to Bridgeport’s Brady Weaver, as Pitcher of the Year. Plus, the duo of Robert C. Byrd’s Adam Secret and Fairmont West’s Trevor Malnick shared the title of Player of the Year.
Joining Weaver, Secret and Malnick on the First Team were: Fairmont West’s Matt Robbins, Andrew Strand, Tyler Walter, Fletcher Duval, Tre Kerns and Johnny Kesling; Bridgeport’s John Koon, Cullin Cutright and Troy Anderson; Robert C. Byrd’s Blake Kiger and Colton Bonnett; North Marion’s Troy Shuck and Austin Bland; Philip Barbour’s Andy Green and Tyler Schiefelbein; and East Fairmont’s Joe Casalinova and Cutter Atha; along with Cody Gainer of Elkins, and Dalton Westfall of Buckhannon-Upshur.
Several other players -- including Grafton’s Eli Peters, Zac Gower, Steve Hunt, James Twyman, Abrahm Blair, Tyler Poston and Chuck McCloy -- received Honorable Mention.
They were joined by: Lincoln’s Zach Pritt, Ryan Holcomb, Austin Weaver, Zach Howe, Chris Barnes, Cody Barnes and Brandon Fazalare; Lewis County’s Brandon Moneypenny, Skyler Carlton, Nate Kemper, Drew Gandee and Thomas Snyder; East Fairmont’s Justin Schmidt, Truman Weese, Ronnie Mills, Tony Hayes and James Bolander; and Fairmont West’s Bailey Mohr, Ryder Skarzinski, Corey Sidow and Brandon Plivelich.
North Marion’s Keegan McCullough, Ryan Harbert and Ryan Jolliffe; Philip Barbour’s Daniel Martin, Dre Johnson and Zac Howdershelt; Robert C. Byrd’s Logan Alastanos, Cameron Carville and Walter Foster; Bridgeport’s Trey Oliverio, Justin Rapp and Tyler Furbee; Elkins’ Riley Lloyd, Houston Schuler and Colby Gainer; and Buckhannon-Upshur’s Nathan Matthews and Jeremy Davidson also received Honorable Mention.
