GRAFTON -- The Grafton High School Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball Team tumbled to the visiting Preston Lady Knights, 46-30, here in the new gym last Tuesday evening, and then they bounced back to beat Liberty, 50-23, Thursday night in Clarksburg.
This split left the Lady Bearcats with a 6-7 record on the season.
Preston won each of the first three quarters of Tuesday’s contest by 10-5, 13-6 and 11-7 margins, before both teams tacked on 12 points apiece during the fourth period.
Mary Jane Braham tossed in 16 points to claim the game-high-scoring honors for the Lady Knights, while Preston’s Nicole Spindler and Grafton’s Kori Rucker also landed in double figures, scoring 10 points apiece.
Rounding out Preston’s offense were Carly Kelley with nine points, Sammy Ash with eight points and the trio of Katelyn Slaubaugh, Kendra Bennett and Jessica Feathers with one point apiece.
Joining Rucker in Grafton’s scoring column were: Logan Nose with five points; the duo of Kristen Weaver and Nancy Isner with four points apiece; Kaitlyn Bord-Robinson with three points; and the duo of Whitney Poling and Lauren Adamczyk with two points apiece.
In Friday’s action, Grafton won 11-4, 13-10, 16-2 and 10-7 margins in quarters one through four, respectively, while Rucker claimed the game-high-scoring honors with 12 points on the night to lead the Lady Bearcats once again.
This time, Abby Rowand, eight, Adamczyk, seven, the duo of Poling and Weaver, six apiece, the duo of Nose and Bord-Robinson, four apiece, Shelby McDougal, two, and Isner, one, scored points for Grafton, along with Rucker, in the winning effort.
Elaina Newlon tossed in nine points to pace the Lady Mountaineers, while Tessa Hartley, five, Ashley Morris, four, the duo of Brittney Powell and Emily Jones, with two apiece, and Andrea Heater, with one, were also scoring some of Liberty’s 23 points during the game.
