BRIDGEPORT -- The Taylor County Youth Football Association swept last Saturday’s Pop Warner Football action away from the home-standing Bridgeport Chiefs.
The Grafton Bearcubs defeated the Chiefs, 21-6, in the Junior Pee-Wee Game to finish an undefeated season, and then the Grafton Bearcat Cubs gained a little taste of revenge over the Chiefs by winning a 52-40 decision during the Junior-Midget Game to complete the sweep.
Bridgeport’s bigger team had defeated the Bearcat Cubs, 33-26, earlier this season, resulting in Grafton’s only loss of the year. However, Coach Deuce Ware’s Grafton grid-stars gained some revenge in Saturday’s rematch by rolling up 520 yards worth of total offense.
Alex Aichele ran like a wild man for the Bearcat Cubs. He carried the football 18 times for a total of 383 yards and six touchdowns. He scored from 60-yards away, 14-yards out, 47-yards away, 17-yards out, 35-yards away and 41-yards out.
In addition to his rushing numbers, Aichele also returned a kick-off 70-yards for a touchdown, and he completed five-of-five passes for 68 yards and yet another touchdown, as Cole Collins pulled down that 20-yard scoring strike.
In supporting roles for Grafton’s offense, Cody Goff (11 carries for 44 yards), Seth Wright (3 carries for 12 yards), Chase Moats (2 carries for 8 yards) and Nate Moses (1 carry for 5 yards) ran with the football, while Collins (2 catches for 24 yards), Chasen Bush (1 catch for 23 yards), Moats (1 catch for 15 yards) and Moses (1 catch for 6 yards) were chipping in with pass receptions.
Aichele (11 tackles), and the quartet of Brody Withers (7 tackles), Nick Watton (7 tackles), Jacob Morgan (7 tackles) and Goff (7 tackles) led Grafton’s defense.
Watton kicked a pair of two-point conversions to complete Grafton’s 52-point performance.
Earlier in the day, Trace Schooley ran 19 yards for a touchdown, Anthony Robinson ran four yards for a touchdown, and Cameron Forte ran 87-yards for a touchdown to lead the Bearcubs to their 21-6 victory, as Schooley kicked one two-point conversion, and Robinson connected with Forte for on a one-point-conversion pass to complete the scoring attack.
Forte (135 yards), Schooley (81 yards), Robinson (34 yards), Hess (5 yards) and Myles Kochka (2 yards) led Grafton’s rushing column, while a Forte-to-Schooley one-yard pass and a Robinson-to-Forte three-yard pass rounded out Grafton’s offense on this day.
Defensively, four Bearcubs wound up making double-figure tackles. They were Zachary Johnston with 13, and the trio of Forte, Robinson and Garrett Ware with 12 apiece.
Plus, Johnson was credited with two fumble recoveries, and Clinton Mayle also picked up one loose football.
Grafton’s Little Team (the Bearcubs) completed their regular-season schedule with a perfect 6-0 record and will be seeded number one for post-season play.
Those play-offs will begin this weekend, with Mannington and East Fairmont Blue battling for the right to come to Grafton on November 7.
Then, the league-championship game will be played on November 14 at Fairmont State University.
Grafton’s Big Team (the Bearcat Cubs) turned in a 6-1 mark during the regular season, and it also drew the number-one seed for the play-offs, by winning a coin flip with the
Bridgeport Chiefs, since they split their two regular-season games.
They will draw a first-round bye and then play a home game on November 7 against the winner of this week’s Mannington vs. Shinnston contest..
