At approximately 6:15 a.m. Saturday morning, Grafton City Police Officer Patrolman Sam Shahan was dispatched to the Newlon’s Apartments behind the Grafton Library for a possible fire in progress. Patrolman Shahan knocked on the doors of the residents to wake them in an attempt to get everyone out safely before the building was completely engulfed in flames.
...“I was asleep and the next thing I know I hear this pounding at the door and it was Sam telling me the building was on fire,” stated resident Scott Hays. When asked by this staffwriter if he was able to take anything in the apartment with him he replied, “The babies, thank God. The most important things. Sam is my hero!”
...As of 9:30 a.m. Saturday, it was believed that everyone made it out safely. The fire is still under investigation. For the complete article see the 10-28-2013 issue.
