Penny Wars comes to Taylor County Middle School

Posted: Monday, Dec 10th, 2012

PRUNTYTOWN – The Grafton Rotary Club held its annual Penny Wars at Taylor County Middle School (TCMS) this year. The fundraiser is a part of Rotary International’s End Polio Now Campaign.

This year, Penny Wars was held from Oct. 15 through Oct. 19, and all of the TCMS students were able to participate. Each classroom had a jug to collect pennies, silver, and dollars. The object is for each classroom to collect as many pennies as possible.

Silver, and dollars, count as a negative toward the final count of pennies. This is where the war comes into play, as other classes can sabotage a class by putting silver, or dollars, in that class’s penny jug.

At the end of each day, the Grafton Rotary Club and First Community Bank collected the money and gave each class a running total. By the end of the week, students had devised strategies on how to win the game.

At the end of the week, TCMS had collected a total of $2,385.51 to go toward eradicating Polio. This means 3,975 children will be vaccinated against the dreaded disease.

A presentation was made to the students at TCMS, whose collective efforts were remarkable.

The Penny Wars winners were decided by which class had the highest positive count, or, which class had collected the most pennies, and the least amount of silver.

This year’s Penny Wars winning classes were: Mrs. Weaver’s fifth-grade class; Mrs. Newcome and Mrs. Safferman’s sixth-grade class; Mrs. Skaggs’ seventh-grade class; and Mrs. Lynn Smith’s eighth-grade class.
