Snowbird shuffle at Flemington Elementary School
Modified: Wednesday, Feb 3rd, 2010

Students at Flemington Elementary School enjoyed a visit from Snowbird and Channel 12 WBOY Weather Anchor, Jason Parrish.
The winter weather, and blowing snowdrifts delivered a special guest to Flemington Elementary School on Friday, January 29, 2010. The winter visitor was the infamous Snowbird.

The room was filled with students, teachers, parents, and other visitors anxious to meet the large winged bird. The picturesque winter land backscape created the perfect atmosphere for such an occasion.

Snowbird and sidekick, Jason Parrish from Channel 12 WBOY out of Clarksburg, West Virginia appeared before an eager crowd. As the duo took center stage, the room was filled with an enthusiastic, energetic, and cheerful crowd that warmly welcomed and applauded the guests.

Snowbird and Parrish were well equipped to provide an entertaining and rewarding time for all the readers in the room. First on the agenda, was a hula-hoop contest between a Flemington student and Snowbird.

The contest went like this, if Snowbird won teachers would have to do the Snowbird shuffled, and as the result of the outcome it forced the facility to perform the Snowbird shuffle in front of the entire student body. Students were amazed to see the teachers shuffle and wiggle with the large bird.

Students radiated with smiles and sounded with giggles as they swayed around the room and shuffled along with Snowbird.

Snowbird who remains cool all year long, presents students with a reading challenge. This reading challenge is another way for educators, parents and Snowbird himself, to encourage students to continue reading throughout the summer months.

Not only does Snowbird encourage reading, but in return follows through to acknowledge students that participated in the reading challenge. In addition, those students that meet or exceeded the criteria received honorary recognition in front of peers and commemorative keepsakes.

Snowbird thanked students for their participation and reading in the summer challenge. Snowbird also honored and recognized five of the top readers from Flemington Elementary School.

The five top readers include Aaron Anderson who read over one thousand books, Tyler Starkey, Eddie Jardan, Selenia Campbell, and Hana Whitehair. Snowbird presented these dedicated readers with a medal for the accomplishments.

The Snowbird Reading Challenge recognizes everyone who participates, whether its one book or one thousand books, and reminds students it is cool to read all year long.
